Under the Hong Kong Companies Ordinance, all Hong Kong incorporate & registered entities are required to maintain books and account records to comply with annual statutory audit requirements. Being an international finance center, Hong Kong has adopted a Financial Reporting Standards Framework (HKFRS) based on the International Finance Reporting Standards (IFRS). Aside from ordinance requirements, there are also a number of reasons to maintain accurate books & business records including:

Bookkeeping & Accounting

All Hong Kong Limited companies are required to prepare financial statements on an annual basis. Requirements vary depending upon size of business - private companies and Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have simpler requirements compared to large corporations. For example, these smaller private/SME companies are able to nominate a specific date for accounting (annual year) & prepare the financial statements in any currency.

Hong Kong Corporate Tax Filings

Hong Kong registered companies must submit Profits Returns to the IRD (Inland Revenue Department) upon request. Specific deadlines depend on the assessed profits for each year of assessment.

Audit

Companies registered in Hong Kong (excluding dormant) are required to undertake an annual financial audit by an auditor registered under the Professional Accountants Ordinance (PAO). Rules differ for newly incorporated companies and no mandatory year-end date exists - each company can choose their own.
